Regional Profile
The Katahdin Region is truly a four season destination. The spring season arrives in the region with the beginning of the fishing season and moose watching. As the weather warms and summer nears the tourist return to the region for whitewater rafting on the Penobscot River, hiking in Baxter State Park, viewing Mt. Katahdin, fishing, camping, swimming or to just enjoy a peaceful, relaxing day. The region has activities in Millinocket for the 4th of July, a Summerfest in East Millinocket in July and the Wooden Canoe festival in Medway in August. When the air starts to cool and frost is in the air the region brags to some of the most spectacular areas of viewing the fall foliage. Along with this time of year comes the fall hunting season for the Maine moose and black bear, grouse and woodcock and also the elusive whitetail deer. When "ole' man winter" puts his bite on the region there are miles of snowmobile trails to ride, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and also ice fishing. There are a variety of jobs in the region including paper production, health care, education, manufacturing, forest harvesting, retail and the tourism/recreation industry.
Communities
The Katahdin Region is made up of three communities with each adding their own unique qualities to the region. The 'Main" entrance to the region is obtained when exiting off I-95 on exit 244. The first town of the region entered will be Medway, known as the "Gateway to the Katahdin Region". With a population of approximately 1500, the town of Medway was incorporated in 1875 and is situated where the East and West Branch of the Penobscot Rivers unite. As you travel west on Route 157/11 you will enter the town of East Millinocket, "The Town that Paper Made". With a population of approximately 1800, the town was incorporated in 1907 with the building of "Great Northern Paper Company". As you continue your travels you will leave East Millinocket on Route 157/11 and as you leave the town you will pass by the Katahdin Regional Industrial Park, a park set up for economic development opportunities. In 1987 Eastern Maine Community College and the University of Maine System combined to form the Katahdin Region Higher Education Center in the park to promote higher education in the region without having to drive the long distances to colleges in Bangor. The final town in the region on Route 157/11 is Millinocket, located "In the Shadow of Mt. Katahdin". With a population of approximately 5200, the town was incorporated in 1901 as the need for homes and businesses for the workers of Great Northern Paper Company grew.
