Our recreation department offers many programs for the youth and the young at heart in our towns.  We work with the Recreation Committees in our neighbor towns to offer a wide variety of programs for the Katahdin Region.  Please scroll down the page to see the activities that are available throughout the year. Please contact the office for a complete detailed list of activities as there may be some that are not listed on this site.

2010 Spring Activities for the Katahdin Region Rec. Departments

  • GIRLS' LASSIE LEAGUE  This program is for girls in grades 3-6.  There will be practices and games throughout the months of April, May, and June.  This program takes place in East Millinocket and Millinocket. 

     

2010 Summer Activities for the Katahdin Region Rec. Departments

Registration for all programs will be taken at the program sites during the first week. There will be no fees for programs unless one is listed.  If a participant would like to pre-register, the Millinocket and East Millinocket offices will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 11 for pre-registration.

The public pools located on North St. in East Millinocket and at the Rec. area in Millinocket will open on June 14 and close on August 20.

1:00-4:00 PM General Swim Monday - Sunday

6:00-7:30 PM (Mon., Wed, and Fri. only)

4:00-5:00 PM Tues. and Thurs. Adult Swim (Millinocket Only)

 Supervised Swim in Medway

The Medway beach located on the East Branch of the Penobscot River will be open for supervised swim from
12:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Monday through Friday, beginning June 21
through August 13.

Swimming Lessons in East Millinocket and Millinocket

 The Recreation Department charges a fee for swimming lessons.  The fee schedule is as follows:

ONE CHILD                          $10.00
TWO CHILDREN                 $14.00
THREE CHILDREN             $18.00

 A scholarship program is available for individuals or families who have a problem with the fee schedule. 
The classes will begin June 28
.  Registration for swimming lessons will begin June 14. 

The following courses will be offered:
Infant & Preschool Aquatic Program, Beginner Swimmer, Advanced Beginner Swimming, Intermediate, Swimmer, Advanced Swimmer

A Lifeguard Training course will be offered to swimmers age 15 & older who want to become American Red Cross Lifeguards. 
The course will run on June 11,12 and 13
.  The cost of the course is $225.

A Water Safety Instructors Course will be offered the week of June 21 from 8:30 AM - 4 PM.
Interested individuals must be 17 years of age.  The cost of the course is $225.

  • The Playgrounds

    The playgrounds will be supervised with activities Monday through Friday. 
    The Recreation Department will offer three playground trips to be scheduled on Tuesdays.
     
    Supervised playgrounds will open Monday thru Friday starting on June 21 and will end on August 6
    .

    East Millinocket (Pool Area): 9-11:30 M, W, F and 1-4 Mon. - Fri.

    Medway (Rec. Area): 12-3

    Millinocket (Pride Park): 9-11 when the pool is open and 1-4

  • Arts and Crafts Program  

    This is a program that allows young children to design and make a variety of crafts and other imaginative projects. 
    This program will start on June 21 and end on August 6
    . 

    Millinocket (Building near playground) 9-12

    East Millinocket (Schenck High School Auditorium) 9-11:20

    Medway (playground building) 12-4

  • LUNCH PROGRAM  

  • There will be a lunch program offered to children from Medway, East Millinocket, Millinocket, and Woodville.
    It will be offered in Millinocket and East Millinocket at 11:30 AM beginning June 14 and in Medway on June 21.
    This program runs Monday thru Friday.

    THEATER  

    This program will be held in the auditorium at Stearns High School.  Instructors will teach basic theater and the participants will be working on a production during the summer. The program will be from 9-12 noon on Mondays thru Thursdays, starting on June 21 and ending on August 2 with the performance on August 3. 

  • Basketball

  • MT. KATAHDIN BASKETBALL CAMP (This will be held this year at Stearns High School) The Recreation Department
    will be sponsoring a basketball clinic during the week of June 14.  Children entering grades 3-6 from 9:00-12:00 and children entering grades 7-10 from 1:00 to 4:00.  The cost of the clinic will be $55.00 if you register by June 4.  If you register after
    June 4 but before June 14 then the cost is $60.00 per student.  A complimentary T-Shirt and awards will be given to all. 
    The clinic will include drills, films, foul shooting, games, shooting contests, and awards.

    This Program is a partnership with: Tanous and Snow, Attorneys at Law, The EastMill Federal Credit Union, and Gray Fox Graphics. 

  • YOUTH BASKETBALL  There will be youth basketball in both East Millinocket and Millinocket.  This program will teach the participants basic basketball skills such as shooting, passing and defense.  Participants will also compete with teams from other communities.  The basketball program will be held on Monday through Thursday at the gym at Medway Middle School for East Millinocket and Medway residents and the gym at Stearns High School for Millinocket residents. This program will start on June 21 and end on July 29.

    East Millinocket/Medway(Medway Middle School) Monday-Thursday 10:00-12:00

  • HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL Youth entering grades 9-12 will be able to participate in the Summer High School basketball program in both Millinocket and East Millinocket.  The programs will take place at Stearns High School this year.  Participants will attend practice as well as games against area schools.  Games will be from   The season will start June 14 and end with the Summer Basketball Festival on July 16 and 17, which will be held at Stearns High School.
  • Soccer

  • Challenger Soccer Camp  Challenger Soccer offers over 30 years of experience.  All campers must have shin guards and a water bottle with them. T-Shirt and Soccer ball will be provided.  August 2 - 6

    Ages 5-6 Mini Soccer                   4-5:30 PM             

    Ages 7-11Intermidiate program              4:30-7:30 PM

    Ages 12-18 Advanced program      4:30-7:30 PM        

  • SUMMER SOCCER     This program is for High School and Alumni male and females. It will be on Thursdays beginning on June 17 at 6:00pm on the upper soccer field behind Schenck High School.

  • Baseball/Softball

  • TEE BALL  The tee ball program is for grades K-2. The program takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Starting on June 21 and ending on August 5. The program allows for children to practice hitting, throwing, and catching.  This program will be in Millinocket at the Rec. Complex from 8:00-9:00 AM.

  • FARM LEAGUE  This program is a more advanced version of tee ball.  Farm League is for children grades 3-5 and is offered on Monday and Wednesday at 8:00-9:00 AM starting on June 1 and ending on August 4 in Millinocket at the Rec. Complex Field. 

  • SENIOR LEAGUE BASEBALL  Senior League baseball will be open to participants in grades 8-12.  This program will begin on June 14 at DiFederico Field in Millinocket, and games will be played in both Millinocket and East Millinocket, time to be announced.

  • CO-ED SOFTBALL   There will be a co-ed softball league in the Katahdin region this summer, with 7 teams participating.  Teams will be playing evening games through June, July and August

  • TENNIS 

    Tennis lessons are going to be given free of charge in Millinocket.  Instructors will teach children basic skills like serving, returning, rules and scoring.  The tennis program will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting on June 22 and ending
    on August 5
    .       Grades 2-4     9:00-10:00      Grades 5-7     10:00-11:00       Grades 8-12        11:00-12:00

    Football

  • CAMP T.D.  The Stearns Football coaching staff and area coaches with years experience will be offering a clinic to all students entering grades 6-12 during the week of July 26-29 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. The focus of this camp is to develop and improve on skills needed to play the game of Football. Coaches will teach the proper fundamentals, techniques and love of the game while challenging each attendee to improve each day. Athletes will be divided up into groups based on age, ability and position.
    This is a non contact clinic.

    Fun Runs

  • Fun runs for all ages at the Stearns High School track in Millinocket.   Beginning June 23 - August 11 from 5:30PM to 6:30PM. This program will run every Wednesday. 

  • The ages and races are as follows: 100m---3 and under     200m---6 and under     400m---10 and under    800m---15 and under      1 Mile---all ages

    Canoe and kayak usage 

  • Through donations from Old Town Canoe, the Katahdin Area Partnership, the Schenck Outdoor Education program, and local businesses, we offer Kayak Classes and the use of kayaks and canoes to children and adults. For further information please contact the Recreation Office at 746-3553

Fall Activities for the Katahdin Region Rec. Departments

  • We have an exercise class available in the Auditorium of the Municipal Building from 9 - 10 A.M. Monday - Friday.

  • The Recreation Department and East Branch Martial Arts team together to offer kickboxing and karate lessons throughout the year beginning in September.  Please call Adam McLaughlin at 746-5098 for more information.

  • Soccer programs are available for children in grades K - 3 on Sunday afternoons. There is also a traveling junior league team for grades 4 - 6 that have games with other teams from the area.

  • A Quilt workshop is offered in September - December.

  • The East Millinocket Senior Citizens meet every Monday at 1 P.M. in the downstairs of the Municipal Building beginning in August.

Winter Activities for the Katahdin Region Rec. Departments

  • PeeWee basketball programs are available for children in grades 3 - 6.  There is also a traveling All-Star team selected from these teams that competes with other teams throughout Northern Maine.

  • Open gym at Schenck High School on Sunday is from 1 - 2:30 for grades 3 - 6 and 2:30 - 4 and 6 - 8 for students in grade 7 and up.

  • Holiday Lighting and Christmas Party is held at the Opal Myrick School in early December.

  • The Senior Citizens Christmas lunch will be held in December in the Banquet Room of the Municipal Building.

  • We also offer a skating rink behind the tennis courts for all of the outdoor activity enthusiasts. The rink opens as soon as the weather permits.

  • Early morning workout is available at Schenck High School from 5 - 7 A.M. in the gym and weight room from December - April.

  • In January we offer a youth basketball program for grades K - 2.

  • In February we offer an indoor soccer program for grades K - 4.
