Job Title: POLICE SERGEANT
Department: PUBLIC SAFETY
Supervisor: POLICE CHIEF
This is a supervisory police position involving responsibilities of a shift commander. The Sergeant supervises police patrol, related police work and paper work of all officers under his supervision. The Sergeant is responsible to and reports directly to the Chief of Police.
The Sergeant is required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency situations. The work involves an element of personal danger.
TYPICAL DUTIES (but not limited to)
- Performs all duties relative to that of a Police Officer.
- Performs the duties of the Police Chief in his absence.
- Supervises patrol officers in the proper discharge of their duties, ensures their compliance to the department regulations and is responsible for their performance, proficiency, discipline, conduct and appearance.
- Assigns officers to posts of duty and instructs them regarding their duties.
- Reviews and evaluates performance of patrolmen.
- Supervises dispatch and distribution of patrolmen and vehicles during the absence of the Chief.
- Takes active charge in serious or unusual situations.
- Checks reports of patrolmen, reviews them for accuracy and completeness and personally makes reports to the Chief.
- Other as directed or required by the Chief of Police.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Comprehensive knowledge of modern police administration and of police methods, comprehensive knowledge of laws and ordinances, thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of methods of patrol, traffic control, criminal investigation, crime detection and prevention and radio communications, knowledge of the functions of Federal, State and Local jurisdictions and authorities as they relate to police work, ability to maintain cooperative relationships with other municipal officials, State and Federal authorities and the general public. Effective oral and written communications skills, resourcefulness, sound judgement in emergencies, high integrity and morals, high level of discipline.
Good physical condition.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle Operator’s License issued by the State of Maine and shall be insurable under the Town’s vehicle insurance coverage.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING
Completion of a standard high school course supplemented by special police courses in law enforcement and courses in modern police administration. Maine Criminal Justice Academy certification preferred or equivalent training in order to be certified by MCJA. College degree in law enforcement is highly desirable and or four years progressive experience in law enforcement, or any equivalent combination which provides the required knowledges, skills and abilities.

Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a few seconds and tax the maximum of human endurance. Therefore, the employee must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that will enable them to handle recurrent contacts and involvement with dangerous and potentially dangerous situations. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain the ability to walk up and down stairs, utilize protective equipment, including bullet proof vest and other protective clothing, endures moderate exposure to weather, extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions and other environmental conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be subjected to a variety of hazards including, electrical hazards, fire hazards and unsafe conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, hazardous chemicals and materials, intense heat, extreme cold, natural and man-made disasters and hazards associated with working in and near traffic. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to extreme.
